In addition to already providing free-compost bins to those who have yard space for it, Orlando is also leading an initiative to collect all types of food scraps and convert them to electricity. Here's quick news story: https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/orlando-launches-food-waste-drop-off-program
While the farmers markets (where the city typically sets up collection tents) may be closed for a while because of CV-19, there is also a semi-secret, street-side drop off spot at 1028 Woods St., right across the street from their Solid Waste Management offices! This link provides info & graphics for what's allowed (read: ALL edibles!). https://www.orlando.gov/Initiatives/Food-Waste-Drop-Off
But as Jady Chen with the city's Office of Sustainability & Resilience explains: "Keep in mind this [drop off spot] is not the cart in the parking lot of the Solid Waste Office! The unmonitored bin is located next to the recycling drop off bin on Woods Ave, on the side of the fence with the black mesh covering. If you are coming from Gore Street onto Woods Avenue, it is on your left. If you're coming from Columbia Street and onto Woods Avenue, the bin is on your right."
I admit, on my first trip over there, I was one of the folks wandering around their parking lot. 🤓 Jady herself pointed me to the cluster of waste bins across the street.
If you're outside of Orlando -- and especially if you're in a circumstance where composting is difficult -- what options have you found that work for you?
